South American sardines are most famous for their high omega-3 fatty acid content (EPA & DHA). Although the sardine oil (18% EPA; 12% DHA) is a famous omega-3 supplement, whole sardines are used more for pet food than for human consumption. South American sardines are fished along the pristine coastlines of Chile and Peru, where the fisheries are well managed by the Chilean and Peruvian authorities. There are two main fishing seasons per year and the governments set a fishing quota twice per year.
Sardine meal is a pet food ingredient that is relatively rich in protein, containing 65 to 70% protein, making it a powerful energy source for cats and dogs alike. Thanks to the high content of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA in sardines, sardine meal offers various health benefits for cats and dogs. These include increasing the absorption of vitamins and minerals, stimulating hormone production, ensuring healthy growth and development, and helping in the prevention and treatment of diseases. IQI's sardine meal can be supplied with MSC certification. The product is stabilized with a natural antioxidant for a longer shelf life.
