South American sardines are most famous for their high omega-3 fatty acid content (EPA & DHA). Although the sardine oil (18% EPA; 12% DHA) is a famous omega-3 supplement, whole sardines are used more for pet food than for human consumption. South American sardines are fished along the pristine coastlines of Chile and Peru, where the fisheries are well managed by the Chilean and Peruvian authorities. There are two main fishing seasons per year and the governments set a fishing quota twice per year.
Spray-dried sardine hydrolysate is the premium version of IQI's sardine meal. While both products are similarly high in protein content (71%), the fineness of hydrolysate has several advantages compared to a rendered meal. The product works especially well in low-temperature treat applications – as is the case with most spray-dried ingredients. Spray-dried hydrolysate can be used specifically for hypo-allergenic diets, or in general for diets in which a higher protein (and lower ash) level is required or for diets that require superior digestibility. Because of the high content of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA in sardines, sardine hydrolysate powder offers the same health benefits for cats and dogs as sardine meal.
